Freezing fog diversion…
Cousin Joey and I had a fun flight planned yesterday for Brenham Municipal Airport. This is a destination Joey hasn’t visited and I was eager to introduce him to the 50’s Diner on the field and the waitresses with their poodle skirts.
I awoke yesterday to clear, blue skies and METAR reports of “clear below 12,000 feet.” Moving east, however, the Brenham AWOS reported the following:
METAR K11R 221445Z AUTO 00000KT M1/4SM FZFG OVC001 M01/M01 A3035 RMK AO2
Freezing fog? That didn’t sound good. After talking to a weather briefer, Joey and I decided to head to another destination he’d never been to - Kerrville Municipal/Louis Schreiner Field (KERV).
We departed with clear skies and enjoyed a very smooth 20 minute ride to the airport. After dodging a pair of turkey vultures in the traffic pattern, I was pleased with the smooth touchdown on runway 12. The folks at Kerrville Aviation provided a courtesy car and we went into town to grab some Mexican food at Mamacita’s Restaurant.
With bellies full and tanks topped off, we departed for San Antonio. The sea of air we surfed was less smooth on the quick journey back and we had an exciting moment just outside the Class C Airspace when we received two traffic advisories at 12 o’clock “opposite direction”. All three pilots saw each other and we had a front row seat as both a Regional Jet and a Navy twin-engine plane zoomed past us.
