One Six Right

Subtitled “the Romance of Flying”, the new movie One Six Right is unlike any aviation documentary you’ve ever experienced. It is a visual feast with some of the best air-to-air videography I’ve seen. Played appropriately with my Dolby Digital 5.1 home theater setup, the walls shaked in our house as a P-51 Mustang’s merlin engine roared past us.

To top it off, it features a beautiful soundtrack that captures the beauty and adventurous spirit that is flying.

When I first heard about One Six Right, I quickly e-mailed it’s director, Brian Terwilliger, asking him how I could promote the movie. He quickly replied and sent me several posters and promotional items! I was impressed with his enthusiasm. I distributed these to fellow pilots and some local flight schools.

Why?

Because the other very satisfying aspect of this film is that it is an ambassador for general aviation. By telling the story of historic Van Nuys airport, it sends a clear educational message to the non-flying public that general aviation is a critical component of the local and national community. The interviews and experiences shared in the film shed light on how incredibly positive the act of learning to fly affects the lives of human beings from a variety of backgrounds.

Watch it…you won’t be disappointed. When you’re done…make it a point to let others, especially non-pilots, watch the film as well. Do your part!

I also applaud Brian on capturing the in-flight beauty of a lot of “common birds” like my favorite - the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. It is especially endearing to see a landing sequence in the movie of a late-model Skyhawk on short final touch down. I remember telling everyone watching the movie, “Hey…there’s me and Shannon….landing after another fun flight!” Or a shot of a 172 flying over the picturesque mountains and valley of California.
