Cessna’s “Next Generation Piston”

I’m ALMOST done with prepping a good sampling of my photos from HeatVenture…I mean AirVenture 2006. I’ll have about 35 images or so for your viewing pleasure. It was another great show and I was honored to accept the assignment to take photos for General Aviation News once again.

One of the big surprises was the fly-by of a “top secret” new Cessna that is in the works. At the end of a press conference about their other big news item - a possible Cessna entry into the LSA market - Cessna’s CEO Jack Pelton announced that Cessna is working on what it calls the “Next Generation Piston” airplane.

Seconds later, the airplane made a purposely distant fly-by.

I was covering the press briefing and decided to run furiously from my post near Jack’s podium to get as close to the runway as possible. As the super secret Cessna made a second pass, I brought my Canon EF 100-400mm lens skyward to capture this shot (click for a detailed enlargement).

The Cessna NGP - Next Generation Piston

Famed GANews writer Meg Godlewski summed up this new Cessna quite well. “It looks like a Cessna 182 and a Cirrus SR-22 mated and this is the offspring.”

I was proud of this shot! You can clearly see a few significant design changes for Cessna including a) a castoring nosewheel, b) a “shark fin” tail, c) a more aerodynamic fuselage.

It will be interesting to see how Cessna markets this airplane and whether it ultimately replaces one of their current models.
